Malaysia combines national manufacturers with international assembly operations and a component, tooling and service base. Evaluate each opportunity through the specific product, site, customer and compliance pathway. Assembly presence does not establish that every model or component is locally manufactured.

Dashboard

Production and market dashboard

Each figure carries the series it came from, the period it covers and the definition that limits it. Read those before you quote any of them.

Read these carefully. Sales, manufacturing output and import/export values describe different activities. They cannot be added together. MAA passenger/commercial vehicle totals are not motorcycle production totals. Historical GDP/employment and trade snapshots retain their own dates and definitions.

Two publishers, two production figures for 2025

The production figure on this page is MAA's own total industry production for full-year 2025: 747,780 units, released 20 January 2026. The MITI Q4 2025 Trade and Economic Information booklet publishes 772,049 for the same year. The difference between the two has not been reconciled by either publisher, so this page uses the direct MAA series, says so, and leaves both figures visible rather than averaging them or quietly preferring one. Check the two primary documents before quoting either number.

Manufacturing

What Malaysia manufactures

The manufacturing landscape includes passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and motorcycles, alongside component production and industrial services. National and international assembly operations provide distinct sourcing opportunities; confirm each purchasing organisation’s current programme.

Selected manufacturers and assemblers

13 entries — and what is actually verified about each

Filter by the stage of activity, because an announced or half-built plant is not an operating one. Company and assembler names are text; the photographs elsewhere on this page are editorial illustrations and none of them shows a named facility. Nothing here is a ranking or a market-share claim, and a brand's presence never means a particular model is locally assembled or carries local content.

Showing 13 of 13 manufacturers and assemblers.

Where the activity is

Six evidenced geographic groups

Each group is named from the sources below it. No map is drawn here, because no coordinate set was independently verified — a generated map would be a picture of a guess.

Components and capability

Components, tooling and supplier capabilities

Use the capability catalogue as a starting point for sourcing, then check the supplier’s drawings, samples, quality system and actual production scope. Association membership, a factory photograph or a broad certification badge does not establish approval by an OEM.

Editorial illustration of parts banner in a Malaysian automotive context
Editorial illustration. Not a photograph of an actual plant, named company facility, government office or university.

Showing 12 of 12 pathways.

Tier 1

Supplies an OEM directly, typically a system or assembly.

Tier 2

Supplies parts or processes into a Tier 1 or another supplier.

Tier 3

Supplies materials, processes or smaller inputs further upstream.

On the tiers above. These are explanatory tier definitions. No unverified nationwide tier count is asserted.

Company-reported capability examples

Read this before using any name below. Selected company-reported capability examples. No ranking, OEM approval, current product certification or platform partnership is implied.

Aftermarket, tooling, testing and qualification

Four panels where the approval route matters more than the sales pitch

JPJ vehicle type approval and the certificate of conformity to production for specified components are legal approval paths. Standards Malaysia, testing and certification providers, and MIROS and ASEAN NCAP all do different jobs. An ISO or IATF quality system, an NCAP rating and a legal approval are not interchangeable, and there is no universal licence or certification promise here — confirm the current requirement for the activity you actually intend to carry out.

Trade and market access

Imports, exports and market access

Match the product classification and period before comparing trade values. For commercial decisions, confirm tariff classification, origin rules, any applicable AP/import permissions, destination-market approvals and the actual landed cost. Manufacturing output is measured in units; customs trade is measured in value.

Editorial illustration of trade banner in a Malaysian automotive context

Showing 4 of 4 rows. 2025 full year, RM million.

Malaysia’s motor vehicle, motorcycle and component trade, 2025 full year, in RM million. MITI Q4 2025 booklet printed page 75 / PDF page 80 grouping: motor vehicles, motorcycles, components and parts. Full-year data in RM million, not an HS 87-only total. Published total imports differ from component sums by RM0.1m due to rounding. Do not combine this table with the broader 2024 annual-report automotive classification. Source: MITI — Q4 2025 Trade and Economic Information booklet (opens in a new tab) (checked 2026-10-11).
Product groupExports (RM million)Imports (RM million)
Total motor vehicles, motorcycles, components and partsAs published. Not the sum of the rows below — see the rounding note.14,026.542,285.4
Motor vehicles2,380.915,262.4
Motorcycles153.91,418.2
Components and parts11,491.725,604.7

Rounding, as published. The import rows sum to RM0.1 million less than the published total. That rounding is in the published table and has been preserved; no correction has been invented.

HS 87 covers non-rail vehicles and relevant parts, but tyres, engines, batteries and chips can sit in other chapters. Use Customs classification for the actual product.

Exports and imports are shown side by side and are never netted into a single balance figure here, because this grouping is not the whole automotive value chain.

Before you quote a landed price, do these five things

  1. 1.Identify the product and complete technical specification.
  2. 2.Confirm Customs tariff classification and import/export procedure.
  3. 3.Use MITI’s current FTA resources for origin and tariff eligibility.
  4. 4.Confirm destination vehicle/component safety and environmental requirements.
  5. 5.Use MATRADE and relevant industry/chamber networks for market discovery.

Naming ASEAN or any agreement does not by itself create duty-free access. Tariff preference, rules of origin and the destination market’s own technical requirements are three separate tests.

Official channels

Approved permit and import-permission requirements depend on the product and the activity. Confirm them with Customs and the relevant authority for your own case; nothing here is a clearance.

Different measurement, different section: GDP, employment and investment are historical and announcement figures, not trade values.

Economics

GDP, employment and investment: read the scope

The verified NIMP manufacturing baseline reports RM23.6 billion in value added for 2022 at constant 2015 prices and 102,081 manufacturing employees in December 2022. These are historical manufacturing measures, not a current total for dealers, repair, logistics and the wider ecosystem. A current automotive-only GDP percentage and realised nationwide employment count were not verified in this pass.

Potential is not hired. Investment announcements indicate potential jobs, not completed hiring. Build workforce plans around machining, metrology, automation, quality, diagnostics, software and high-voltage skills; training demand is not a quantified job guarantee.

Figures deliberately left off this page

These exist in the research and are not published here, because neither is an automotive-only measurement. They are named so that nobody later finds them in the register and assumes they were simply forgotten.

A chapter of its own

Chapter: EV and the electrification ecosystem

EV opportunities span local vehicle assembly, electric-drive integration, power electronics, charging, technical service and battery management. Distinguish locally operating production from announced projects, and finished battery-pack assembly from cell manufacturing. Confirm the product, site and project stage before a sourcing or investment decision.

  • Keep this chapter’s numbers separate. The figure beside this card is sales growth. It is not production growth, not an electric share of the market, and not a carbon outcome. Overall production and trade figures stay in their own sections above.

What a company currently reports

PROTON’s 3 August 2026 release reports local DHT and electric drive unit production at Tanjung Malim. This is a company-reported manufacturing milestone, not an independent production-volume audit. Perodua also reports QV-E production at its Smart Mobility Plant and an EV-localisation update dated 15 June 2026. Do not present launch-stage planned capacity as current realised output.

That is a company-reported milestone, dated. An imported vehicle is not local manufacturing, an announced plant is not an operating one, and integrating a battery pack is not manufacturing cells.

Policy and permissions

Check current MIDA, MITI, Customs and charging-regulator conditions. Do not repeat expired imported-EV incentives or assume past exemptions remain available. For battery recovery, confirm environmental and competent-handler requirements.

No expired imported-EV concession, no generic exemption date and no target charger count appears on this page as an achieved fact.

Skills and engineering

Skills, academia and applied engineering

Industry capability depends on manufacturing skills as well as design and research. UMPSA, UTM and UniKL provide useful starting points for education and collaboration. Match the programme or research unit to the actual project, qualification and equipment need.

Institutions and networks

Government, institutions, associations and joint chambers

Use the directory to find the relevant authority, technical resource or business network. Chambers and associations facilitate contacts and advocacy; they do not issue government approval or guarantee procurement. This is a selected practical directory, not every organisation operating in Malaysia.

What the categories mean. Government and public-support bodies set policy and run approval pathways. Testing and technology services test and advise; they do not approve. Industry associations represent members. Bilateral and joint chambers are independent business networks — they do not issue permits, and none of them, or any other body here, is a partner of The True Malaysia.

Opportunities

Where a practical business case can begin

Potential pathways include localisation, precision components, tooling, aftermarket distribution, export readiness, engineering services and EV support. Potential is conditional on customer demand, compliance, qualification, cost and execution.

AUTO-08 — MIDA, Manufacturing New Incentive Framework (opens in a new tab)AUTO-22 — MACPMA, Association history (opens in a new tab)AUTO-38 — MATRADE, Automotive parts and accessories (opens in a new tab)AUTO-39 — Customs, Motor vehicle excise resources (opens in a new tab)

What can make the case fail

Commercial potential here is conditional. These are the conditions.

  • Model mix and price competition
  • Supplier qualification and programme volumes
  • Imported input costs and exchange rates
  • Export-market rules and origin eligibility
  • Skills, utilities and capital requirements
  • Battery safety and end-of-life obligations

Business brief

Prepare a brief you can take to the right body

A local worksheet. It runs entirely in your browser: nothing is sent to The True Malaysia, to an authority or to a company, no supplier is matched, no certificate is checked and no approval, licence, incentive or finance is promised.

Prepare your brief

Everything stays in your browser. Nothing is sent to The True Malaysia, to an authority or to a company, and no passport, payment detail, drawing or blueprint is asked for.

Assistance you need (required, choose at least one)

What you will get

A plain-text brief setting out what you are trying to do, the buyer check that applies to your chosen pathway, the questions to raise in the right order, and the official and institutional resources to take it to — with their own links and enquiry guidance. You can copy it, print it or download it.

It is a worksheet to prepare with. It is not an application, not a supplier match, not a certificate check and not a submission to anyone.

4 journey cards above and every pathway card can pre-fill this form for you.
